Bridging the Gap Between Innovation Promise and Practice

October 20, 2026

Every year, innovators develop new technologies designed to improve patient outcomes, increase efficiency, reduce costs, and expand access to care. Yet many of these solutions never achieve meaningful adoption or reach the users they are meant to serve.

This theme surfaced repeatedly at ADA Forsyth dentech this year. When asked what separates successful innovations from those that fail, leaders repeatedly returned to a simple question: Will people actually use it? Many noted that innovations often struggle not because the technology is weak or the solution isn’t valuable, but because they fail to fit into existing systems, workflows, and processes.

Why great solutions sometimes fail

To evaluate the potential for success in the market, we need to look to commercialization experts. They evaluate common failure points including poor workflow fit, lack of reimbursement pathways, and weak business models.

Sometimes the difference between success and failure isn’t developing the best solution. It’s developing a solution that people are willing and able to adopt. Through CareQuest’s work with founders, providers, payers, and health care organizations, we’ve repeatedly seen that innovation succeeds when it solves a real problem, fits existing workflows, demonstrates clear value, and minimizes the burden of implementation.

What are organizations really looking for?

Interesting or novel solutions may capture attention. But adoption decisions are driven by very practical questions:

  • Will it solve a meaningful problem?
  • Will it work in our environment?
  • Can it fit into existing workflows?
  • And can we justify the investment?

Demonstrated adoption matters

Because adoption is difficult, organizations rarely make large commitments based solely on a pitch deck, a case study, or even promising research.  They want evidence that a solution can work within their environment, with their teams, workflows, and patients. Well-designed pilots provide that evidence while helping innovators refine implementation approaches and demonstrate value.

One of the strongest takeaways from dentech was that oral health doesn’t necessarily need more ideas. It needs better pathways for turning good ideas into sustainable change. That perspective aligns closely with our belief that adoption, reimbursement, implementation, and collaboration are often the factors that determine whether innovation ultimately reaches tens of thousands of lives and improves health outcomes at scale.

Driving lasting change with ACCELERATE

Ultimately, the future of oral health will not be determined by invention alone. It will be shaped by the innovation that can be successfully integrated into real-world practice.

Innovation is exciting; adoption is what creates impact. CareQuest’s ACCELERATE program helps organizations and established innovative solutions prove the ROI, stakeholder alignment, and implementation readiness needed to support broader adoption. ACCELERATE helps establish a clear path to integration, uptake, and scale.
